# Book on the way in, not once you are already there

> Door James runs on Apple Watch, on Wear OS and in CarPlay. The watch shows the next booking, checks people in and carries the badge QR code on the wrist. In the car the voice assistant handles booking and check-in hands-free, and Siri answers questions about the current booking out loud. Widgets and Live Activities keep the booking and the check-in window on the lock screen.

The decision to go to the office is made before anyone opens an app. Door James meets it where it happens.

## Key facts

- **Apple Watch:** next booking, check-in, badge, colleague status
- **CarPlay:** voice assistant, hands-free on the commute
- **Siri:** booking questions and answers by voice
- **Lock screen:** widgets and Live Activities

## What works without the phone in your hand

- **The next booking on the wrist** – Which desk, which floor, from when – without taking the phone out of a pocket or a bag.
- **Check in from the watch** – One tap on the wrist confirms the booking when you arrive. The desk stops being at risk of automatic release.
- **Badge on the wrist** – The badge QR code is on the watch too – enough for an event entrance, with both hands full.
- **Voice booking in CarPlay** – On the way in, say what you need. The assistant finds a free desk and books it, without the phone leaving its holder.
- **Siri understands the context** – Siri knows which booking a notification is about, so the answer can simply be spoken.
- **Suggestions before you ask** – Apple Intelligence learns the check-in routine and offers it at the time you usually arrive.
- **Widgets and Live Activities** – Today's booking, the check-in window and who is in the office – on the home screen and the lock screen, without opening the app.
- **Wear OS as well** – Bookings, check in and out, invitations, offices and the badge QR code on Android watches – with a tile for the next booking and a watch-face complication.
- **Check-ins survive bad reception** – Underground car parks and lifts are where check-ins used to fail. The check-in holds on through a weak signal and shows its progress.

## The window that decides everything is twenty minutes long

Most desk booking happens too late. Someone arrives, finds the floor full, books whatever is left and sits three rooms from their team. The decision that would have helped – which office, which area, next to whom – had to be made during the journey, and during the journey nobody opens an app.

That is the actual reason Door James is on the wrist and in the car. Not because it is technically possible, but because the twenty minutes on the way in are the only time the question is still open.

## Why the watch raises occupancy figures

The unglamorous benefit is check-in discipline. Checking in is a small extra step, and small extra steps get skipped – which is what produces a no-show rate of thirty per cent and an occupancy report that understates reality.

A tap on the wrist is short enough not to be skipped. That has two effects at once: colleagues stop finding desks marked red that are actually empty, and the utilization data that space decisions rest on gets closer to the truth.

## What we do not claim

This is convenience, not a separate product. The watch shows bookings, checks people in and carries the badge; it is not an administration surface and there is no floor plan on a 45-millimetre screen. CarPlay is voice-first and deliberately shows very little, because Apple's guidelines limit what may be displayed while driving and because that limit is the right one. And none of it tracks anybody: the geofence radius is evaluated on the device, and no location history is kept for it.

## How it works

1. **On the way** – Ask for a desk by voice in CarPlay, or let the suggestion appear at the time you usually set off.
2. **On arrival** – Check in from the watch, by QR code at the desk, or automatically through the geofence.
3. **During the day** – The lock screen shows the booking and the check-in window. Extending or cancelling takes one tap.

## Who it is for

- **For commuters** – Booking happens during the journey instead of in the lift, where it is usually already too late for a good desk.
- **For people on the move** – Reception, workshop, warehouse, client site: the wrist works where the phone stays in the pocket.
- **For office management** – Higher check-in discipline, because checking in stops being an extra step – and occupancy figures depend on exactly that.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do we need a separate licence for the Watch or CarPlay?

No. Both are part of the Door James iOS app and therefore part of the subscription. There is no per-device fee and nothing to license separately – a colleague with an Apple Watch simply has it.

### What about Android?

There is a Wear OS app too: bookings, check in and out, responding to invitations, browsing offices and the badge QR code on the watch, with a next-booking tile and a watch-face complication. Android Auto is on the roadmap and not shipped yet – so in the car, the hands-free route is currently CarPlay.

### Is booking by voice while driving safe?

CarPlay is voice-first by design and Apple's own interface guidelines limit what an app may display while the vehicle is moving. Door James follows those rules. Even so: a booking is not urgent. If a situation needs attention, it is the road.

### Does the watch track location?

No. The optional geofence check-in evaluates the radius locally on the device and no location history is stored for it. The watch shows bookings and triggers a check-in; it does not report where somebody is.

### Do the Siri features need Apple Intelligence?

The suggestion of a check-in routine builds on Apple Intelligence and therefore needs a device that supports it. Booking and checking in by voice work without it. Which features are available also depends on the iOS version on the device.

### Can the assistant in the car book without confirmation?

It states what it is about to book – location, resource, time – and waits. That matters more in a car than anywhere else: a booking made by a misheard sentence is noticed at the earliest on arrival.
